WizKid's Background

Wizkid, by real name Ayodeji Ibrahim Balogun, is one of the leading music superstars in Nigeria and a global Afrobeats ambassador. He was born on the 16th of July, 1990, in Surulere/Ojuelegba, Lagos, Nigeria.


Wizkid’s Parents & Family Background

Wizkid was born into the Baloguns family. Alhani Muniru Olatunji Balogun His father is a Muslim and one of the respected elders in Surulere, Lagos State.

Wizkid's father is a successful businessman and worked as a civil servant. Alhaji Muniru had three wives, which makes Wizkid part of a large extended family.

His father remained humble and private in his life despite his son's fame and wealth.

Wizkid's mother, Mrs Jane Dolapo Balogun, was a Pentecostal Christian. She's very prayerful, supportive, loving, caring, and intentional towards others.

She was known for her loving, prayerful, and supportive nature; she supported and encouraged Wizkid’s dreams from his childhood to stay focused and responsible, even when he dropped out of the university to pursue his music career.

Sadly, Wizkid’s beloved mother passed away in London after a brief illness on August 18, 2023.


Wizkid's Family & Siblings

Wizkid is the youngest child of 12 older siblings in his family from his father’s three wives. His family lived in Ojuelegba, Surulere, an area that inspired his famous song “Ojuelegba”. Wizkid as a child, growing up in such a big family, taught him discipline, humility, and respect.


Wizkid's Education & Music Career

Wizkid began his music production at age 11, under the stage name "Lil Prinz" earlier on.

He attended Ijebu Ode Grammar School. 

In 2009, he signed to the record label Empire Mates Entertainment (E.M.E.). 

Made his debut major single, “Holla at Your Boy”, in 2010; the release gained him widespread attention. 

And in 2011, he did his debut studio single, "Superstar".

Wizkid's genres in music are Afrobeats, Afropop, R&B, reggae, and dancehall. 

He is known for blending African rhythms with global sounds, helping bring Afrobeats to the international stage.

And as well influential in fashion, brand endorsements, and cultural style, representing Lagos in his art. 

He founded his own label, Starboy Entertainment, in 2013. 


Wizkid's Achievements & Milestones

Wizkid, as an international figure, has had the following achievements: Grammy Award for Best Music Video (for “Brown Skin Girl” with BeyoncĂ©). 

He was recognized by the Guinne

ss World Record for his contribution to “One Dance”. 

His track “Essence” became a global hit and solidified his international status.

Many more awards included BET, MOBO, The Headies, etc.
